US Dollar Strength, Weakness and the Price of Gold: A Primer

When the US Dollar gets stronger, it takes fewer dollars to buy any commodity that is priced in $USD. When the US Dollar gets weaker it takes more dollars to purchase the same commodity.
The price of all US Dollar denominated commodities, like gold, will change to reflect the fact that it will take fewer or more dollars to buy that commodity. So it’s quite possible, in fact it’s almost always the case that a portion of the change in the price of gold is really just a reflection of a change in the value of the US Dollar. Sometimes that portion is insignificant. But often the opposite is true where the entire change in the gold price is simply a mathematical recalculation of an ever-changing US Dollar value.
When the dollar gets strong, gold appears to go down, and vice versa. That accounts for part of the fluctuations that we see in the value of gold.
The other part is an actual increase in the supply or demand for gold. If the price is higher when being measured not only in US Dollars, but also in Euros, Pounds Sterling, Japanese Yen, and every other major currency, then we know the gold demand is higher and it has actually increased in value.
Consequently, if gold is higher in US Dollars while at the same time cheaper in every other currency, then we can conclude that the US Dollar has weakened, and that gold has actually lost value in all other currencies. But the price, because it is being quoted in $USD will be higher and give the illusion of gold becoming more valuable. In such a case the devaluation of gold, due to increased supply on the market, is camouflaged by a weakened US Dollar.

2013 - The Year of the Gold Bull ?

2012 wasn't a fun year for most Gold bulls. Seeing the S&P 500 outperform Gold and seeing Gold stocks get decimated through the 1st half of the year was enough to create suicidal sentiment that is now only marginally improved after another prolonged correction in the precious metals (PM) sector to end the year. But as the many calls for an end of the PM bull market by several of the same people who have been wrong / missed out the whole way up get louder, the risk in the PM sector gets lower and lower.

The bigger picture hasn't changed and isn't going to for some time: a major private sector secular economic contraction in the West being fought with manufactured money/credit units by governments and central bankstaz. This is not a period to favor paper, as reflected by common stocks, over Gold. My trade of the year for 2013 is the same as my favored trade back in August: go long the "Gold to Dow" ratio (or short the "Dow to Gold" ratio).

MAJOR TOP IN STOCKS & MAJOR BOTTOM IN GOLD

For months and months now I've been warning traders that QE3&4 were going to have a major effect on stocks. I knew that analysts claiming that each new QE was having less and less affect would not apply to this latest round of quantitative easing.

I was confident the latest counterfeiting operation by the Fed would push stocks to at least test the 2007 highs, and I really expect we will see a marginal break above that level sometime this year. Probably by the end of the month. My current guess is that we will get a sell the news type of event as soon as the sequestration can is kicked down the road and that will mark the top of this particular intermediate cycle.

Make no mistake though we are still in a secular bear market. Stocks are testing their all-time highs at the same time earnings are in decline, GDP has turned negative, and unemployment is starting to tick up.

It has been my expectation that the stock market would put in a final top sometime this year. I also expect this will be a very extended and difficult topping process lasting months if not a year or more.

What is the treatment for mesothelioma

There are three traditional kinds of treatment for patients with malignant mesothelioma. Often two or more of these are combined in the course of treatment:

    surgery (taking out the cancer),

    radiation therapy (using high-dose X-rays or other high-energy rays to kill cancer cells), and

    chemotherapy (using drugs to fight the cancer).

Surgery: There are several types of surgery used in treating mesothelioma.

    A pleurectomy is the removal of part of the chest or abdomen lining and some of the tissue around it.

    Depending on how far the cancer has spread, a lung also may be removed in an operation called a pneumonectomy.

    In an extrapleural pneumonectomy, the lung is removed along with the lining and diaphragm (the muscle that helps you breathe) on the affected side. In this surgery, the lining around the heart is also removed.

    Sometimes a pleurectomy/decortication is performed. In this surgery, the lining of the lung is removed along with as much of the tumor as possible.

Radiation therapy uses high-energy X-rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation may come from a machine outside the body (external radiation therapy) or from putting materials that produce radiation (radioisotopes) through thin plastic tubes in the area where the cancer cells are found (internal radiation therapy).

If fluid has collected in the chest or abdomen, your doctor may drain the fluid out of your body by putting in a needle into the chest or abdomen and using gentle suction to remove the fluid. If fluid is removed from the chest, this is called thoracentesis. If fluid is removed from the abdomen, this is called paracentesis. Your doctor may also put drugs through a tube into the chest to prevent more fluid from accumulating.

Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy may be administered by pill, or it may be put into the body by a needle in the vein or muscle.

Chemotherapeutic agents can be administered either systemically (through the bloodstream) or intrapleurally (in the pleural cavity). When it is administered intrapleurally, the treatment is localized at the site of the tumor. These drugs are generally very toxic and you should discuss their use very carefully with your physician.

Trading and vaulting gold

Most central banks either purchase gold directly from bullion banks or else they buy domestic mine production or locally recycled gold. Banks buying gold bars will typically purchase in the global OTC market, the majority of which is settled via gold bars stored in London (“loco London”).

London Good Delivery bars form the basis of this market. Available from bullion banks, these bars must be at least 995 parts gold out of 1000 and weigh between 350 and 430 fine ounces. The bars must also meet other stringent conditions set by the London Bullion Market Association

The OTC market trades on a 24-hour continuous basis (spot gold settled on day T+2). Twice daily during London hours there is a fix which provides reference gold prices for that day’s trading. Either the morning (AM) or afternoon (PM) London fix forms the pricing basis for many long-term contracts. Market participants will usually refer to one or other of these prices when seeking a basis for valuation.

Central banks that buy their own local mine production will typically have the gold refined up to internationally acceptable standards (“London Good Delivery”) – if it is not already in that state – and will often ship the gold overseas for storage.

Vaulting gold overseas with another central bank or bullion bank is common practice, and can be done on an “allocated” or “unallocated” basis. In an allocated account, the gold is physically segregated from all other gold stored in the vault, the client has full title to the metal in the account and the client’s holdings are identified by bar number, size, fineness and weight. In an unallocated account the client has a general entitlement to a portion of a pool of gold, which allows the bullion bank to lease out the gold for a small yield.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Bank of England are the two largest custodians of gold stored on behalf of other central banks.

Gold, Silver Shares Turn Lower, Metals Surrender Gains

Gold and silver shares relinquished their earlier gains on Tuesday afternoon alongside precious metals and the broader equity markets.

The broad-based sell-off was fueled in part by commentary from Philadelphia Federal Reserve President Charles Plosser, who argued in a speech that the Fed’s third round of quantitative easing (QE3) could threaten the central bank’s credibility and is unlikely to help the U.S. economy.

The U.S. dollar recovered its earlier losses following Plosser’s remarks, which helped put pressure on the precious metals sector.

  

The Philadelphia Gold & Silver Index (XAU) – which rose as much as 1.7% to 192.30 this morning – fell by 1.3% to 186.74 in afternoon trading.  Notable XAU components in the red included Gold Fields (GFI), Harmony Gold (HMY), and Silver Standard Resources (SSRI). GFI dropped by 2.4% to $12.78, HMY by 5.8% to $8.49, and SSRI by 2.3% to $15.46 per share.
